LOOK OUT: Rodgers has sent a warning out to his top four rivals

The Reds scraped a 1-0 victory at Swansea thanks to a freak Jordan Henderson goal after surviving a first half battering.

And though the result puts them two points behind fourth placed United before the two bitter rivals clash at Anfield on Sunday, Rodgers says he wants to finish SECOND.

He said: "Everybody talks about fourth but it was the same last year - we want to do the best we can do and I think Manchester City's result at the weekend gives us an opportunity to finish second.

"Our growing maturity, and the run we are on and the confidence it is building, we can take that into the games that are left and see where it takes us."

Liverpool lost 3-0 to United at Old Trafford in December. But since the turn of the year have gone on a run which now stretches to 26 points from the 30 available.

FLUKE: Liverpool needed a lucky goal from Henderson to get past Swansea

And Rodgers warned: "We can look forward to that game now - they are massive games (against United), great games to be involved in.

"I think hopefully it will show the strides we have made since we played them a couple of months back, and for that I have to give great credit to the team.

"The United match although we lost was actually a turning point. I saw enough that day to know we could get the results going forward.

"What the players have done since and how they have believed in the system and the way of working has been superb.

"We knew it would need time to get back to this level, and there is still a lot of work to do but we are on the right path."

Swansea boss Garry Monk admitted: "It is a disappointment. We had the chance to get something from that game - we dictated the first half.

"To concede the deflected goal we did is hard on the players. Against these big teams you have got to take your chances when you get them."
