Chelsea are ready to beat Manchester United to the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid by preparing to table an offer, according to reports from the Metro.
The 21-year-old is set to become the subject of a £39.4million bid from the Blues, with Jose Mourinho keen on reuniting with his former player.
United are also very interested in the services of Varane, and given how their defence has been struggling as of late, manager Louis van Gaal is aiming to complete a deal as well.
The France international is believed to be unhappy under Carlo Ancelotti due to his lack of playing time, and may consider a switch if he is promised a regular role.
The two Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation of Paris Saint-Germain star Marquinhos, another young defender that has caught the eye of both managers.
Either way, one or even both of the mentioned centre-backs is expected be the subject of a huge transfer bid once the window reopens in the summer.
