An overhead kick from Gilberto Macena gave Buriram United a 2-1 win over Guangzhou R&F as the Thai side defeated their Chinese hosts 2-1 to go top of Group F in the AFC Champions League on Tuesday.
Lu Lin had put the home side in front after 27-minutes but Korea Republic midfielder Ko Seul-ki was on target two minutes before the break to tie the scores.
It looked likely the sideswould continue to share top spot but Macena’s dramatic goal at the death ensured it is Buriram who lead the group with two victories.
The home side took the lead in the 27th minute when Lin raced onto Michel’s long ball to apply a touch to divert the ball past Buriram goalkeeper Siwarak Tedsungnoen.
In the 43rd minute Buriram got the equaliser when Ko scored with a header from a corner to make the scores 1-1.
On 61 minutes Zhang Shuo had a good opportunity to put Guangzhou in front as he was sent through on goal by Michel’s pass but Siawarak was quick to close the forward down and blocked his close-range shot.
In the 89th minute Diogo’s header bounced up inside the penalty area for Macena and the Brazilian launched himself into a spectacular overhead kick that looped over Liu’s despairing dive for a dramatic and stunning winner for the visitors.
