Gillingham 0 - 1 Barnsley - Joy for Johnson in opening game

Lee Johnson enjoyed a winning start as Barnsley manager as George Waring's second-half strike was enough for a 1-0 victory over Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium.
Waring, on loan from Stoke, tapped home from close range after 56 minutes to seal the Tykes' third successive league win in Johnson's first game as boss.
Gavin Hoyte had the best chance for Gillingham but the hosts succumb to their first defeat in eight games - and a first under the recently-appointed Justin Edinburgh.
Josh Scowen went closest for the visitors in a scrappy first half, while John Marquis' header was the Gills' only meaningful effort.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first, but Barnsley took the lead when Ben Pearson's shot was parried into the path of Waring, who slotted home his second goal for the Oakwell outfit.
Gillingham almost hit back instantly but Hoyte's right-foot shot was brilliantly palmed away by Adam Davies as the Tykes too all three points.
