Bristol City returned to form to strengthen their grip at the top of the League One table with a hard-fought 3-1 win at Doncaster.

The game was closer than the scoreline suggested as Doncaster battled back in spirited style after City had taken charge with an impressive first-half display which saw them 2-0 in front.

Luke Freeman fired the visitors ahead in the 10th minute after taking advantage of a lucky deflection when a misplaced pass from Aaron Wilbraham bounced off a defender straight to his feet.

City were by far the better side in the first half and they made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute when Greg Cunningham slammed home the spot-kick after Paul Butler was adjudged to have fouled Kieran Agard.

Doncaster hit back strongly in the second half and substitute Curtis Main scored the goal of the game in the 59th minute when he unleashed a 20-yard thunderbolt in off the crossbar.

The home side tried hard for an equaliser but were caught on the counter-attack in the 69th minute when Wilbraham added the third against the run of play with a low angled shot following a superb left-wing cross from Cunningham.
