Augsburg 2 : 2 Bayer Leverkusen - Hitz the hero for Augsburg

Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz scored a dramatic late equaliser to earn his side a 2-2 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen on his return to the side after injury.

Josip Drmic gave Leverkusen an early lead which was cancelled out by Caiuby's strike on the hour mark.

Leverkusen thought they had snatched victory when Stefan Reinartz scored five minutes from time but Hitz went up for a late corner as Augsburg tried to find an equaliser, and he delivered to bring a dramatic end to the game.

Drmic looked particularly keen to take his chance having been preferred by coach Roger Schmidt to Stefan Kiessling, who paid the price for last weekend's first-half performance in which Leverkusen found themselves three goals down to Wolfsburg.

The former Nurnberg striker had the first shot of the game in the seventh minute, which was blocked, before opening the scoring a minute later.

Son Heung-Min set Drmic up and after Hitz saved his first effort, he made no mistake with the rebound.

Karim Bellarabi, fresh from committing his future to Leverkusen with a new contract, was running the show for the visitors and he was next to test Hitz, who was preferred over Alexander Manninger in the Augsburg goal.

Hitz justified his inclusion with another fine save to deny Bellarabi midway through the first half, but then he got caught out on the edge of his area, gifting the ball to Son, whose goalbound shot was cleared by Ragnar Klavan's diving header.

Augsburg had to gamble a bit more in the second half and they started well, getting their equaliser on the hour mark.

Substitute Caiuby controlled Daniel Baier's pass well inside the penalty area before beating Bernd Leno with his second touch.

Bellarabi tested Hitz almost straight from the restart but, having survived that scare, Augsburg started to gain the upper hand and they almost took the lead in the 69th minute.

Raul Bobadilla was denied in a one-on-one situation by Leno and Tobias Werner's effort on the rebound was cleared off the line by Omer Toprak, The attack was not over, though, and Bobadilla shot the final rebound just wide.

Caiuby was denied twice as Augsburg pushed forward again, but Leverkusen regained the lead when Reinartz's shot took a deflection off Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker to beat Hitz.

The Augsburg goalkeeper was to have the final say, though, as he joined the melee inside the Leverkusen penalty area for a late corner, and it was he who turned the ball in after Shawn Parker's cross was touched on by Callsen-Bracker.

Augsburg nearly won it too but Halil Altintop's shot hit the post before the final whistle was blown.
