John Sheridan's promotion-chasing Plymouth made it three wins from three with a 2-0 Sky Bet League Two home victory over Cambridge.

They needed two goals in the final nine minutes to do it, though, with strikes from Ryan Brunt and Lewis Alessandra sealing the triumph.

Cambridge midfielder Sully KaiKai came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half, smashing a 20-yard free-kick off the face of the crossbar 11 minutes in.

Home goalkeeper Luke McCormick then made a superb one-footed stop to deny target man Jordan Slew as he broke through.

Argyle responded positively with right wing-back Drew Talbot sending a shot from the right just wide of the far post and Olly Lee's overhead kick forcing keeper Chris Dunn to back-pedal and flap the ball over as spectacularly as the scissors kick was delivered.

Plymouth had to be patient against a resolute Us side, eventually breaking through in the 81st minute when Dunn parried Bobby Reid's shot into the path of substitute Brunt, who smashed home.

Three minutes later striker Alessandra made it three goals in as many games with another sublime close-range finish after teasing the home defence.
