Scunthorpe United 0 - 1 Oldham Athletic AFC - Latics leave it late

Carl Winchester struck six minutes from time to earn Oldham a 1-0 win at Scunthorpe that moved the Latics into the top six.

Scunthorpe suffered only their third league defeat in 15 games since manager Mark Robins took charge last October, leaving them down in 18th, five points clear of the drop but only seven off the play-off places.

In a lacklustre opening 45 minutes it was Scunthorpe who carved out the best two chances.

Midfielder Neal Bishop was only a whisker away with a volley that flashed across the face of the goal and striker Tom Hopper glanced a header just wide of the far post following Jordan Clarke's cross.

Oldham enjoyed plenty of possession but struggled to make it count, getting nothing on target to test keeper Luke Daniels in the opening period.

In the second, leading marksman Jonathan Forte missed a great chance to add to his 14 goal tally this season when he broke free against his old club but fired straight at Daniels.

Late in the game, Scunthorpe looked for a boost from the substitutes bench giving home debuts to their two newest signings - Manchester City loanee George Evans and Dutch striker Kevin Van Veen.

But in the 84th minute Winchester waltzed unchallenged into the box to fire in the only goal of the game.
