AFC Wimbledon 2 - 0 Newport County - Akinfenwa sinks County

Newport's first game since boss Justin Edinburgh's departure ended in a 2-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

Edinburgh joined League One side Gillingham earlier on Saturday after a four-year reign at Rodney Parade.

And the Exiles - who had Kevin Feely sent off after 55 minutes - went on to fall to a fourth successive League Two defeat courtesy of Adebayo Akinfenwa goals in each half.

The Dons delivered an early warning as Barry Fuller penetrated down Newport's left-hand side after five minutes and delivered an inch-perfect cross for Akinfenwa, whose header went inches wide.

But Akinfenwa made no mistake with his next chance, drilling a header past Joe Day after 11 minutes from Sean Rigg's cross.

Feely was red-carded 10 minutes after half-time for bringing down George Francomb when the Wimbledon player was through on goal, but Akinfenwa was far too nonchalant with his penalty, allowing Day to make an easy save.

But Akinfenwa doubled Wimbledon's lead on 72 minutes, firing home from close range from Francomb's cross.
