Mainz 5 - 0 SC Paderborn 07: Super Mainz move away from danger

Mainz pulled away from immediate relegation danger in the Bundesliga and leapfrogged opponents Paderborn in the standings with a 5-0 win at the Coface Arena.

Yunus Malli's first two goals of the season and a Pablo De Blasis strike saw Kasper Hjulmand's men get off on the right foot at the start of 2015 and move two points above their opponents.

Sami Allagui added a fourth and Johannes Geis a fifth late on from the penalty spot as Paderborn suffered their heaviest defeat of the season.

The visitors actually started the game well, but fell behind at the end of Mainz's first attack in the sixth minute.

De Blasis pulled the ball back for Malli, who shot as he was slipping, but still managed to net his first goal of the campaign.

Malli then turned provider for another great opportunity for Mainz, sending Christian Clemens through, but he shot wide from just outside the penalty area.

His first goal of the season had clearly inspired Malli, who was at the heart of all of the action for Mainz, almost getting De Blasis through on goal before taking a shot on goal himself, but finding goalkeeper Lukas Kruse.

Paderborn were unable to get their usual attacking game going, but they very nearly levelled before the interval when Lukas Rupp rattled the crossbar from just outside the area and Moritz Stoppelkamp wasted the rebound.

Only 45 seconds of the second half had been played when Malli doubled Mainz's lead, latching onto Geis' long ball after it had bounced twice and lashing it into the far corner with the aid of a slight deflection.

Malli then turned provider in the 69th minute for De Blasis, who seemingly put the result beyond doubt by curling his shot into the far corner.

Worse was to come for Paderborn as Mainz debutant Pierre Bengtsson crossed for Allagui to head in a fourth in the 82nd minute and Geis netted a penalty four minutes later to seal an emphatic Mainz win.
