Arsenal try to entice Villarreal defender Gabriel Paulista with four-and-a-half year deal

Arsenal have offered Gabriel Paulista a four-and-a-half year deal to quit Villarreal.

The 24-year-old centre half wants to join the Gunners and his agent held talks with the Spanish club last night.

Arsenal have so far offered around £6m for the Brazilian in a deal which could rise to £10m with add-ons.

But Villarreal are holding out for more money as the player has a £15m buy-out clause in his contract.

Work permit issues would also have to be resolved as Paulista has yet to play for Brazil.

But Arsenal are confident they could successfully argue he is an "exceptional talent" on appeal.

Paulista is enjoying a stand-out season in Spain and his versatility would be a huge asset to Arsene Wenger.

Two-footed and comfortable on the ball, he would provide cover for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, and can also fill in at left back.
