VINCENT KOMPANY has warned critics writing off Manchester City’s title hopes to hold fire.

The influential skipper insists his side are more than capable of stringing together a run of big results.

The 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal has cranked up the heat on City to get a result at Stamford Bridge on the last day of this month.

Chelsea’s 5-0 demolition of Swansea and City’s defeat means Jose Mourinho’s men are five points clear at the top.

Kompany knows the snipers are gunning for his side but insists they are more focussed than ever on the Chelsea clash.

Kompany said: “In theory it should be better for us now because we will be more fired up for it, definitely. We have always been great in games like that so I’m actually looking forward to it.”

The Belgium defender says his men have hung in there despite having some of their big players missing.

He added: “I’ve seen the same desire that I have seen year in, year out and that will never change.

"We have been without Sergio Aguero, myself, Yaya Toure and David Silva for a long period of time and yet we are still here five points behind Chelsea.

"If you had said that to us a month ago we would have said ‘yes we will take it.’ It’s good and its highs and lows, that’s what it’s all about.”

And Kompany points to their recent record of being winners over the course and distance.

"We’ve been in situations like this before and it won’t affect the way we look at the Premier League, or the the way we look at the Champions League or the FA Cup.

"We will just make sure we are better the next game. We are always liable to kick off a massive run and that’s the kind of club we are.”

The Belgian ace is just glad to be back in the thick of things and added: “People who know me see I work like an animal when I am out.

"I want to be back stronger and to be fair, except for the result, it was a good game back.

"So going two, three, four games in, it’s good for me and I’ve come back at the right time as well.”

City are now camped in Abu Dhabi for a spell of warm weather training which will take in a friendly with Hamburg tomorrow.

Kompany added: “The trip comes at the right time funnily enough.

"The Premier League is the most special league in the world because we play over that Christmas period and that should never change.

"But if you do get a chance to get out of it and have a break then it’s not a bad thing.”
