Portsmouth 1 : 1 Burton Albion FC - Brewers miss chance to go top

Burton missed their chance to climb to the summit of League Two with a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth.

Midfielder Darragh Lenihan levelled in the 83rd minute at Fratton Park after Jed Wallace's 12th goal of the season had put Pompey ahead.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink appeared to be heading for only his second defeat in charge of the Brewers but Lenihan's equaliser rescued his side.

The visitors were on the back foot for large spells of the game after dominating the opening 25 minutes.

Portsmouth striker Matt Tubbs could have opened his account for his new club in the 29th minute but he failed to round Brewers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

A mix-up between Brewers captain John Mousinho and McLaughlin almost led to a bizarre opener but the keeper made amends.

Burton's Damien McCrory wasted a chance when fired over unmarked from a Lenihan cross.

But Tubbs was involved again when he teed up winger Andy Barcham whose volley was tipped onto the post by Brewers stopper McLaughlin, only for Wallace to score the rebound in the 36th minute.

Burton jaded as the game went on, but midfielder Lenihan was allowed to run at goal and his shot fired past Paul Jones seven minutes from time.

Tubbs sought a late winner but his 85th-minute header looped over McLaughlin's bar from substitute Paul McCallum's cross.
