Arsene Wenger plays down reports linking Arsenal with a move for Ilkay Gundogan
Arsene Wenger has poured cold water on speculation linking Arsenal with a January move for Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan.
The Gunners have been linked with a host of players during the January transfer window, and midfielder Gundogan has been touted as a possible target for the north London club.
However, Wenger has revealed that his priority is signing a defender this month as he looks to bolster his rearguard options.
The Frenchman's comments come after right-back Mathieu Debuchy was ruled out for around three months after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Asked directly whether Arsenal are considering a move for Gundogan, Wenger said on Friday: “He's not a defender. No, at the moment we are more looking at the defensive department.”
Wenger did, however, confirm that Arsenal are on the verge of completing the signing of Polish midfielder Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw.
The 17-year-old is due to have a medical with the north London club on Friday ahead of his £2m transfer.
Arsenal travel to defending champions Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
