DAVID DE GEA has been offered a 'double your money' deal to make him one of the highest paid keepers in the world.

Manchester United bosses are in talks with De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes and Starsport understands United are willing to pay him a staggering £140,000-a-week.

Chief executive Ed Woodward is prepared to double De Gea's current wages to keep him out of the clutches of European champions Real Madrid.

But the Spanish international wants assurances United will continue to sign big-name stars before he pens a new deal.

His future has been called into question following the decision to hand an 18-month deal to former Barcelona star Victor Valdes.

Valdes has proved his fitness following a serious knee problem and is on a mission to replace De Gea in Louis van Gaal's starting XI.

DEAL: De Gea's new contract will make him one of the highest paid keepers in the world

Boss Louis van Gaal said yesterday: "He joins the club as the number two goalkeeper and is a great addition to the first team."

De Gea is entering the final 18 months of his current deal and Real boss Carlo Ancelotti sees him as the long-term replacement for Iker Casillas at the Bernabeu.

the 24-year-old has finally settled in Manchester following a difficult start to life at United and is now regarded as one of the best keepers in the world.

But while De Gea has expressed no desire to leave Manchester, the former Atletico Madrid star would find a possible return to the Spanish capital hard to resist.

Now it has emerged that De Gea would be willing to pledge his long-term future to United provided the club can convince him the team will start winning trophies again.

Van Gaal splashed out almost £160m on new signings last summer but United are still trailing their biggest rivals in the title race this season.

The Dutchman has been promised another £200m to spend and De Gea is keen to know United have a plan to get back to the top of the game at home and abroad.

One of those big-name signings set for United could be Uruguay and Atletico defender Diego Godin.

Van Gaal's first choice target is Mats Hummels, but United bosses have so far drawn a blank in talks with Borussia Dortmund over the £30m-rated star.

United could now turn to Godin, 28, who has a £28m buy-out clause in his contract and could be lured to Old Trafford if they double his wages.
