Cambridge United 2 : 1 Luton Town - Cambridge battle past Town

Posted Sunday, January 04, 2015 by PA

Cambridge reached the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time in 15 years after beating Luton 2-1.

Robbie Simpson's goal after 27 minutes gave the U's the lead. His brilliant through-ball found Ryan Donaldson, who was felled by goalkeeper Mark Tyler.

Tyler was booked but then make a superb save to turn Simpson's penalty onto the post, only for the Cambridge forward to net the rebound.

After Andy Drury put wide of an open goal for Luton immediately after the interval, Cambridge doubled their lead in the 66th minute.

Donaldson, returning from an injury lay-off, broke from the halfway line and slammed a fine finish beyond Tyler and into the far corner for his sixth goal of the season.

John Still's men found a way back into the game eight minutes later as Jake Howells' cross was met at the back post by Michael Harriman, who headed his first goal for the club.

Harriman then crossed for sub Charlie Walker, who fired just wide as Cambridge went through.
