Roberto Sanchez Madero is a 22-year-old computer engineering student. On Friday he went to the Vicente Calderon to hand in the relevant documents after his father had given him a half season ticket for Christmas.
What he did not expect was the announcement at the stadium that he had officially become the 75,000th Atletico de Madrid member - a figure which represents a new record in 'Rojiblancos' history.
His membership number is 75,000. Obviously there are people who have failed to pay, cancelled their membership over the course of the season, or passed away, but Roberto is one of the 46,526 paid-up Atletico members, whilst there are currently another 28,474 members who have not paid their dues. We say currently, because the tide seems unstoppable: since the end of last season, over 10,000 people have now formalised their connection to the club in one way or another.
Atletico are also expected to enjoy a bright future in terms of their membership base: 30% of 'Rojiblancos' members are minors. In terms of gender, men still represent the vast majority, but women are gradually closing that gap.
In geographical terms, the Community of Madrid dominates, but there is an increasing number of members from the rest of the country and abroad. Apart from Spain, Belgium is the country with the most members.
