Chris Shuker has been registered as a Tranmere player ahead of the Friday night game against Cambridge.
The Rovers coach, 32, last played in May for Port Vale and announced his retirement due to a knee injury, but is hoping that problem has gone away with his current club.
Boss Micky Adams also has defender Josh Thompson back training again following his hamstring complaint.
Midfielder Jason Koumas is still a little way off due to an Achilles problem while Matt Hill, who has a similar problem, is a long-term absentee.
Jordan Chiedozie and Adam Cunnington are available for Cambridge after being cup-tied for their FA Cup win over Mansfield.
The pair sat out the 1-0 win in midweek having already played for Concord Rangers and Bristol Rovers respectively in the competition.
Issa Diallo has also left the club by mutual consent to continue his recovery from injury.
The midfielder ruptured his Achilles earlier in the season and was not expected to return until April.
