Preston North End 1 : 0 Shrewsbury Town - Huntington sees off Shrews

Paul Huntington's first-half goal gave two-time FA Cup winners Preston a safe passage into the third round with a 1-0 win over Shrewsbury at Deepdale.

The Shrews started brightly with James Collins stepping away from Tom Clarke in the fourth minute and curling in a 20-yard shot that was palmed away by North End goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann.

But Preston responded well. Chris Humphrey cut in from the right to unleash a left-footed drive that was tipped away by visiting keeper Jayson Leutwiler.

And the hosts scored the decisive goal in the 18th minute when central defender Huntington, still forward from an earlier corner, swept Kyel Reid's cross from the left into the roof of the net from 10 yards for his second goal in two games.

The impressive Collins saw a second-half shot cleared off the line by David Buchanan, while Preston substitute Kevin Davies curled wide from just outside the box.

The hosts could have sealed the game in the 77th minute but Paul Gallagher fired a penalty 10 yards over the bar after he had been tripped inside the box by Connor Goldson.
