Coventry and Walsall emphasised why they are not setting Sky Bet League One alight as they struggled to create chances in a goalless Midlands derby.

The home side, who have been flirting with the relegation zone in recent weeks, went the closest to scoring in a strong second-half showing but it was not enough to allow them to record successive league victories.

Neither side managed a single effort on target until 10 seconds from the end of the first half when home skipper Jim O'Brien forced a fine flying save from visiting goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell.

The away side probably enjoyed the better of the possession for the first hour with Michael Cain and Jordan Cook both going close without troubling Coventry goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.

But after the break Coventry built up a head of steam. On-loan striker Gary Madine nearly scored with an opportunistic 40-yard lob, which O'Donnell did well to keep out.

The home sideDerby then forced three corners in quick succession with O'Donnell saving from John Fleck.
