Gosport Borough 3 : 6 Colchester United - U's ease through

Posted Monday, November 10, 2014 by PA

Freddie Sears netted twice as Colchester eased to a 6-3 victory at Gosport Borough and into the FA Cup second round.

Justin Bennett scored either side of half-time for Gosport and Lee Wort netted late on but goals from Gavin Massey, Sanchez Watt, Alex Gilbey, Sammie Szmodics and two for Sears completed a dominant display.

Massey opened the scoring on 14 minutes, following up after Watt's header hit the post - and the former Arsenal forward soon made it two after Sears had been released in space to deliver an accurate cross.

On 26 minutes Sears was brought down by Gosport skipper Brett Poate and dusted himself off to convert the spot-kick.

Bennett turned the ball home off the post to pull one back for Gosport but Gilbey ran from inside his own half before drilling home Colchester's fourth on the stroke of half-time.

Bennett slotted low past Sam Walker for his second of the game shortly after half-time but Sears took a touch before tapping in from close-range with 12 minutes remaining.

Szmodics blasted in emphatically for Colchester before substitute Wort's shot went in off the post for a stoppage-time consolation.
