AC Milan vs Fiorentina preview - Montella aims to back up Europa win

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella has called on his players to build on their midweek Europa League away win at PAOK Salonika when they return to Serie A action this weekend.

The Viola go into Sunday night's game at in-form AC Milan buoyed by their 1-0 triumph in Greece on Thursday.

The win, courtesy of Juan Vargas' goal, ensured Fiorentina's perfect record in the Europa League and allowed the Italians to move five points clear of nearest rivals Guingamp at the top of Group K.

"This was a precious victory," Montella said. "I have to compliment my players because this was a very difficult match.

"PAOK had not lost for a long time at home in European competition and the merit has to go to my team.

"My players handed a great performance, showing a lot of will power and determination.

"I liked the approach, as even in the final minutes when we had to suffer, we remained united.

"We need to give continuity to this performance."

Fiorentina have made a slow start to the domestic competition.

They have won just two of their opening seven league games and lost 2-0 at home to Lazio last time out.

The outcome dropped the Viola to 11th place.

Rivals AC Milan are not competing in Europe this season and have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign.

The Rossoneri, coached by Filippo Inzaghi, have won four games and lost just once so far.

Milan followed their 2-0 triumph over Chievo with a 3-1 victory at Hellas Verona last weekend to climb to fourth place.

"After last season's disappointment (AC Milan finished eighth), it was important for us to start well," Milan midfielder Andrea Poli said.

"The game against Fiorentina will give us an indication of where we are at.

"This is a good test for us and we need to have the right approach to this game."

The hosts are without injured midfielder Riccardo Montolivo but welcome back midfielder Nigel De Jong from suspension.
