Freiburg: Mitrovic did the right thing

Bundesliga strugglers Freiburg have shown their support for their defender Stefan Mitrovic for his part in Serbia's abandoned Euro 2016 qualifier against Albania.

The game was abandoned after 41 minutes when a drone carrying a flag bearing a political message was flown over the pitch.

Serbia's Mitrovic pulled the flag down and he has received support from his club for removing the message.

"Stefan just did what every player would have done," said Freiburg's president Fritz Heller to Sport1 television.

"Everybody is annoyed when football is interrupted by political things.

"There was certainly no nationalist or evil thoughts behind his actions. We're going to defend Stefan because we cannot imagine any reason not to."

UEFA are to investigate the incidents which forced English referee Martin Atkinson to abandon the match.

Albania's players were pelted with missiles and physically attacked by invading fans as they tried to leave the field, but they were given a hero's welcome by around 5,000 fans when they touched down on home soil on Wednesday morning.
