AS Monaco interested in signing Wayne Rooney

AS Monaco are interested in signing Wayne Rooney this summer in what could be another dramatic spending spree, The Telegraph reports.

Monaco's vice president Vadim Vasilyev, who is an adviser to owner Dmitry Rybolovlev, has revealed Monaco were discussing the signing of one of the Premier League's top English players and hinted towards re-kindling that interest.

"One year ago, we were discussing one of the top players of the Premier League, a top English player," Vasilyev said.

"But it was on the table. This opportunity finally did not happen, but I think one day that it will come, that it will happen."

Rooney recently signed a new five-year contract with United but as is the case in modern football, contracts have almost become merely symbolic.

In the majority of cases, their purpose is to protect the player as an investment for the club rather than a guaranteed long-term pledge of loyalty from a player. Big contracts secure the best fees for clubs and Monaco are clearly not afraid to continue spending big in the face of FFP regulations.

"I wouldn't really compare Monaco to any other club," he added.

"Our ambition is eventually to win the title of French champions. This is true. I will not give you a time frame, but we would like to do it as soon as possible. We would like to be one of the clubs that plays regularly in the Champions League. I think we can play an important role on the European scene."

Nobody polarises United fans more than Rooney and a potential exit would certainly be a welcome thought by many who feel United would be better off without him.

However, his goalscoring involvement speaks for itself and Louis van Gaal handing him the captaincy is certainly worth something but if a big offer came in this summer, would United sell Rooney?
