Ayr Utd. 2 : 3 Airdrie United - Diamonds shine as United falter

Posted Sunday, September 28, 2014 by PA

Ayr relinquished top spot in Scottish League One after they suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at home to bottom-of-the-table Airdrie.

The lowly visitors silenced the home fans when James Lister scored his first goal of the season on the half hour to give Gary Bollan's side a surprise half-time lead but Peter Murphy levelled for United just after the restart from close range.

Veteran Craig Beattie thought he had secured all three points for the hosts when his clinical finish from the left of the area gave them an 80th-minute lead but his celebrations were dramatically cut short.

Firstly some poor defending allowed Luca Gasparotto to level with a header for the struggling Diamonds before the game was turned on its head in stoppage time as an unmarked Jamie Bain headed Liam Watt's free-kick home to secure an unlikely three points.
