Southend United 1 : 0 Shrewsbury Town - Coulthirst nods Shrimpers to win

Shaq Coulthirst's second-minute header secured Southend a 1-0 win over 10-man Shrewsbury and a fourth successive win for the Shrimpers.

The on-loan Tottenham striker was picked out by John White's deep right-wing cross and brilliantly nodded the ball in to the bottom right-hand corner of the net from 16 yards.

Shrewsbury, who had substitute striker Andy Mangan sent off five minutes from time, came close to equalising, Jean-Louis Akpra Akpro striking the post and James Collins shooting inches wide of the left upright from 25 yards.

However, Southend also posed more problems with Coulthirst having two more headers kept out by Shrews goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler.

The game was less eventful in the second half, substitute Barry Corr wasting Southend's best chance when he headed Myles Weston's left-wing cross straight at Leutwiler.

The Shrews' hopes of a comeback were hit late on when Mangan was shown a second yellow card for a poorly timed aerial challenge on Southend goalkeeper Daniel Bentley.
