York City 2 : 3 Southend United - Shrimpers carry on winning

Southend racked up a third consecutive win by beating struggling York 3-2 at Bootham Crescent.

Second-half Shrimpers strikes from Kevan Hurst and Jack Payne put the game beyond the hosts after Russell Penn had earlier cancelled out Myles Weston's opening goal from the penalty spot.

Dave Winfield did get a late consolation for the Minstermen but York remain without a home victory this term.

Southend forged ahead on ten minutes when Weston got his second goal for the club following a summer move from Gillingham.

He fired a confident penalty to York 'keeper Michael Ingham's left after Payne had been upended by recalled home defender Winfield in the box.

But York went into the interval on level terms when skipper Penn ended a 17-month goal drought in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.

The former Kidderminster midfielder headed past Daniel Bentley from inside the Shrimpers' six-yard box after Jake Hyde had hooked the ball over his shoulder and towards goal.

Southend then restored their advantage on 52 minutes when Ingham spilled a low Payne cross and Hurst gleefully fired into an unguarded net from ten yards.

Payne added a third on 78 minutes with a smart, first-time, 15-yard finish following David Worrall's left-wing cross, meaning Winfield's far-post header from Marvin McCoy's delivery seven minutes later counted for nothing.
