'Our season starts now’ insists Man United boss Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal has said Manchester United’s season starts now after the Red Devils recorded their first three points of the campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers.

United had endured an underwhelming few weeks, with an opening day defeat to Swansea followed by two draws and an embarrassing exit from the Capital One Cup to League One MK Dons.

However, a busy end to the transfer window brought in a string of high-profile players to change their fortunes.

And it was those new faces that helped fire United to victory, with Van Gaal insistent that his side will now kick on in their pursuit of a top three finish.

I said to the players before the match that we have to make a new start,” the Dutchman said afterward.

"This is the selection that we start with now. From September first, after the transfer period, we were only together for two or three days.

"The most important thing is the trajectory. We are building a process and we have to play in a certain style. We have to improve and at the end I hope to be manager of the champions. If it is not this year, then it will be my second or third year, but I want to give a championship to the fans.”

Van Gaal was in ebullient mood after recording his first victory since taking charge, and while he reserved particular praise for record signing Angel Di Maria, he conceded that his side can still improve.

"We can do better,” he commented. “Even Di Maria can. But can you play better when you create three goals and score one?

"When you see the [table] you see that we have plus two [goal difference]. It’s not bad and we have also recorded a clean sheet which is also important.”
