Southend United 2 : 0 Portsmouth - Southend return to winning ways

Posted Sunday, September 14, 2014 by PA

Second half goals from Barry Corr and Shaq Coulthirst got Southend back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory against Portsmouth at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers went into the game without a win in their last five outings.

But Corr's 56th-minute effort settled an uneventful game in favour of Phil Brown's side.

Both teams struggled to create chances with Southend's on-loan left-back Jerome Binnom-Williams having a powerful first-half header from Kevan Hurst's corner well parried to safety by Portsmouth goalkeeper Paul Jones.

In reply, Portsmouth's Miles Storey had a powerful effort blocked at his near post by Daniel Bentley at the start of the second half.

But the Shrimpers were able to hit back to take all three points when Hurst's left wing corner rebounded into the path of Corr and the striker gleefully headed home his first goal of the season.

Southend then made sure of the points in the 90th minute with substitute Coulthirst stroking home a low shot after a powerful run into the box.
