Ángel di María has told Real Madrid he wants to leave and has rejected the offer of a contract. The winger has been heavily linked with a move to England, with Manchester United reportedly willing to spend up to £100m on the fee and wages needed to take the Argentina international to Old Trafford.
Ángel Di María wants to leave Real Madrid, and has rejected a new contract
Carlo Ancelotti had given little away about Di María’s future but on Thursday the Real coach confirmed the 26-year-old, who is under contract until 2018, has asked to leave. "Di María asked to go in the summer and has rejected an offer from the club," Ancelotti said. "The player has to look for a solution. If when the market closes he’s still here, he will work with us like last season and there will be no problem."
Ancelotti, speaking on the eve of Friday’s Super Cup second leg against Atlético Madrid, added: "He’s a Real Madrid player and until 31 August, as I’ve already said, anything can happen. I’m surprised to read that there seems to be some disagreement [about Di María] between the club and me. There’s no disagreement and we both think the same."
The Italian manager also said the midfielder Sami Khedira has rejected a contract, although the World Cup winner has not said he wants to leave. Arsenal are reportedly interested in the 27-year-old, who has seen competition for a place in the Real lineup increase with the signings of his Germany team-mate Toni Kroos and Colombia’s James Rodríguez.
Ancelotti said of Khedira: "It’s a different situation to Di María. He’s not asked to go. He’s rejected an offer to renew but has a year of contract. We’ll see what happens."
Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit to face Atlético. The forward, who was hit by a series of injury problems at the end of last season, went off as a precaution at half-time during the first leg at the Bernabéu on Tuesday after suffering a hamstring strain during the 1-1 draw.
"He is available to play and will be able to start the game," Ancelotti said. "All the players are ready but that doesn’t mean I won’t make changes."
There were fears that Ronaldo had suffered a recurrence of the knee injury he suffered at the end of last season and carried into the World Cup in Brazil.
Real have set their sights on winning all six trophies on offer this season having won the European Super Cup against Sevilla, but they were lacklustre against Atlético and the draw has put their city rivals in the driving seat.
Ancelotti said: "We are used to playing against Atlético and they are used to facing us. I don’t think the style of game will be different. They now have the advantage from their positive result at the Bernabéu but I think it will be the same type of match. We need to defend, counterattack well and take advantage of free-kicks."
The Atlético midfielder Raúl García said it is important for their fans to take the trophy at the Vicente Calderón. "Another match, at home. Very eager to play for our fans, of winning another title that we really want," he said.
