Frank Lampard will captain England in their final World Cup game against Costa Rica after manager Roy Hodgson confirmed Steven Gerrard will start on the bench.

Lampard to captain England

Hodgson has made changes ahead of Tuesday's closing Group D encounter in Belo Horizonte, with England already condemned to a humiliating early exit from the tournament.

Gerrard, who is still considering his international future, will be rested for the dead rubber with Costa Rica, meaning veteran midfielder Lampard can register one more World Cup appearance.

The 36-year-old is nearing the end of his England career and this could prove to be a last cap for his country.

Ross Barkley will have the chance to impress from the start after a lively substitute appearance in Thurday's 2-1 defeat by Uruguay, while fellow youngster Luke Shaw is set to play his first game in the tournament.

Shaw comes in for Leighton Baines, who misses out with a groin problem, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains absent after enduring more injury misery.

A knee injury prevented the Arsenal man from being fit for the start of the competition and he will play no part after a recurrence of the problem.
