Rodgers, whose current deal enters its final year this summer, has yet to get around the negotiating table but is already plotting his long-term future.

And that future includes young stars such as Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Jon Flanagan, Joe Allen and England international striker Daniel Sturridge.

The Anfield chief is rubbing his hands at the thought of nurturing his young squad, watching them grow and develop further – after hopefully lifting the club’s first title for 24 years.

And the Northern Irishman can’t wait to hear 20,000 more of the faithful singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" in a completely revamped and expanded Anfield.

Rodgers asked if he was looking five years ahead, said: “That’s in my mind.

"I feel valued at the football club. I feel at home. Absolutely.

"It’s been a wonderful 22 months so far.

There have been tough times but I love being here. There’s still a long way to go, though.

"I came to Liverpool because I hoped it would be a destination rather than just a stop-off. I felt it had everything you want as a football manager.

"To be at one of the leading clubs in the world. To be allowed to build and develop a club as you wanted without interference and to have a great relationship with the owners.A MAN WITH A PLAN: Brendan Rodgers is hoping to nuture his young Liverpool players in the coming years

"As a manager you know your value, your work and that will always come into it.

But I’m also looking at the expansion of the stadium.Brendan Rodgers has a five year plan in place for his Liverpool team

"Imagine Anfield with another 20,000 supporters in it. So that’s the positive development. I look forward to seeing new pitches at the training facility and at Anfield.

"There’s a real project there that I want to oversee. I’m 41. I have many years as a manager ahead of me – and there aren’t many bigger clubs than Liverpool."

Rodgers beams at the thought of a highly successful future as he continues the job of bringing back the good times to Liverpool on a permanent basis after too many years without a domestic title.

And his face lights up when he talks about the working relationship with his talented, multi-national squad who he hopes will be with him all the way over these next five years.

Rodgers added: Yeah, that was the idea. It’s why we bought so many young players. Joe Allen’s 24, Jordan Henderson 23, Raheem Sterling 19, Jon Flanagan 21.

"Mamadou Sakho’s only 23. Simon Mignolet 25, Daniel Sturridge 24 and Luis Suarez is still only 27. Lucas is 27 and Philippe Coutinho 21. And obviously there are others to come through.

"Steven Gerrard at sweeper when he’s 40? Sweeper? Keeper? We’ll just keep moving him back!

"So that’s the idea here. We keep trying to move on and build something.” Rodgers is, of course, totally aware of the title shift towards Anfield af ter Sunderland’s midweek draw at Man City.

But all he is focused on is the game at Norwich today and he added: “It’s the next game and the next game is always the most important for us.”
