WE NEED OUR FEAR FACTOR BACK: Wayne Rooney has admitted teams no longer fear playing at Old Trafford

The Manchester United striker offered the honest assessment after the Premier League champions suffered their SIXTH home defeat of the season on Tuesday night against bitter rivals City.

And Rooney has called for a return to form at home as they prepare for a Premier League clash with Aston Villa and a Champions League last-eight showdown with Bayern Munich.

He said: "It's not good enough.

"We can't lose six homes games in a season and we have to put that right, and make Old Trafford a place which teams fear again.

"We have to step up and start giving the fans something to cheer about with some good performances and wins.

"No-one likes to lose a derby game - they're big games and they're great to win, but when you lose it's not a great feeling. For the fans and for us, we have to win more and stay together."

Defender Rafael apologised to fans yesterday but supporters are starting to lose patience with not only boss David Moyes but the under-performing players.

The Brazilian said: "Sorry for our fans, I have never felt so sad in my life. We will come back to where we belong."

Where they supposedly belong seems a long way back after their latest humiliation in a horror season for Moyes.

After the renewed belief following a win over Olympiakos and victory at West Ham, it was back to the inept United on Tuesday as they collected another unwanted record.

This is the first time they have 10 Premier League defeats in one season - and there are still seven games to go.

Moyes also had to endure the first real fan backlash as a supporter was escorted away from the dugout as he vented his anger at the under-fire boss.

His predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson, the man who effectively appointed him, was blasted in the directors' box after the derby demolition and stewards had to protect "The Chosen One" banner that hangs from the Stretford End.

Moyes now has to deliver a win against Villa on Saturday and the Scot will be hoping Pep Guardiola's all-conquering Bayern do not embarrass them next week.

The Germans wrapped up the Bundesliga title in record time as United were being outplayed by City to give the English side a reminder of the mammoth challenge that awaits them in the quarter-final tie.

The word from inside Old Trafford remains the same - the manager will be given time despite languishing in seventh.

United's supporters have been commended for their support of Moyes despite going from champions to chumps inside a matter of months.

But fan unrest is growing and the Glazers will be sitting uncomfortably if the mood further sours at Old Trafford.
