Ayr boosted their play-off hopes with a thumping 5-0 win over struggling East Fife at the Bayview Stadium.
The hosts actually started the brighter of the two sides and could have taken the lead but for a fine save from David Hutton to deny Gary Thom.
But United were gifted the lead from the penalty spot, converted by Michael Moffat after 36 minutes before he added his second of the game three minutes later with a close-range finish.
Kevin Kyle all-but ensured victory on the stroke of half-time when he rose highest to head home Scott McLaughlin's corner.
The Honest Men continued the rout after the break as Michael McDonald bundled the ball home six minutes after the restart and substitute Alan Forrest added further gloss with another close-range effort deep into stoppage-time.
