Arbroath 2 : 1 East Fife - Smokies seal vital win

Posted Sunday, March 09, 2014 by PA

Arbroath recorded their first back-to-back wins of the season with a 2-1 defeat of East Fife in a battle of the league's bottom two.

The visitors raced into an early lead when Liam Buchanan took full advantage of a quick Stephen Hughes free-kick to fire beyond Sandy Wood but their lead lasted a matter of minutes as Paul Sheerin's men hit back.

The Smokies forced a corner and, when the Fifers failed to deal with Alan Cook's delivery, Michael Travis tapped home easily to send the teams in level at the break.

The comeback was complete though with 13 minutes left to play when Paul McManus grabbed his third goal in four games to move Arbroath within a point of safety.
