PROVE TO ME YOU DESERVE IT: Jose Mourinho has turned up the heat on Spurs boss Tim Sherwood by saying the rookie manager has to prove he is good enough to manage a big team

Rookie boss Sherwood, 45, admits he is already fearing for his job - with the likes of Dutch duo Louis van Gaal and Frank de Boer lurking - just a few months after being handed the Tottenham reins.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s decision to hand one of the Premier League’s top jobs to a young English coach was widely hailed.

But Mourinho reckons Sherwood - who took charge after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked in December - is under huge pressure to show he deserved the opportunity that many other home-grown bosses crave.

The Chelsea boss said: “I don’t know if it is important an English manager gets a chance at this level.

“Now it’s up to Sherwood. He has a chance. A chance that lots of people are waiting for. Now it’s up to him.”

Managerial master Mourinho will get a close look at apprentice Sherwood for the first time when his table-topping Chelsea side host fifth-placed Tottenham today.

And it could be just as interesting on the touchline as the pitch when two of the league’s most animated coaches go head-to-head.

But Mourinho insists he is unlikely to be causing any problems thanks to the calming influence of the Premier League’s fourth officials.

The Blues chief spoke out in defence of Newcastle boss and friend Alan Pardew after he landed himself in hot water last weekend for headbutting Hull midfielder David Meyler.

But he claims the extra officials are helping him end his wild dugout days.

Mourinho said: “Speaking generally, I like very much the profile of the fourth official this season, more than ever.

“Before the referee comes to send you to the stands or show publicly that he’s telling you to calm down. Now the fourth official is there, going from one bench to the other saying things like ‘Jose calm down, you calm down, don’t say that, don’t put your arms in the air, don’t create a difficult atmosphere for the ref’.

“They’re not going around like a policeman. Generally, the fourth officials know very well how to calm situations.

“I found myself two metres on the pitch in a home match the other day. Is that a reason to be sent to the stands? Yes.

“But the fourth official came to me and asked: ‘What are you doing, man? Where are you going?’

“So I came back. The fourth officials are doing a very good job for the managers and the officials.”
