England star Wazza gave the strongest hint yet he wants to remain at Old Trafford, rebuilding the side’s fortunes alongside Robin van Persie and new £37million signing Juan Mata.

Talking on Football Focus, Rooney also conceded that United’s defence of the title is as good as over, following their eighth league defeat last Saturday against Stoke.

Rooney is in his 10th season with United and rumours have been rife of a summer move, following Chelsea’s well-publicised pursuit of him last year.

Talking about his situation, Rooney said: “I have said all along I am focused on my football and trying to make the team more successful.

“That is what I have done all season and that is what I will do until the last game of the season.”

He said: “Records mean more to me now that I am older. I want to get to Sir Bobby’s records, both at the club and at international level.

“It is something I would like to do and hopefully if I can do it, it would make me very proud because those records have stood for a long time.”

LEGEND: Rooney and Charlton take a walk around the Old Trafford turf

Rooney’s former Everton colleague and close pal Alan Stubbs also believes he will stay at Old Trafford. He said: “I am confident he will sign a new deal at Old Trafford and Wayne is happier than he has been in a long time, playing his football.”

TV pundit Mark Lawrenson agrees with Stubbs’ assessment and said: “I can’t see him going, you can tell by actually looking at him. He is leaner and fitter.

“He has been fantastic for them and I think someone is speaking in his ear, telling him you can break all records at this club and become a legend.”

But Rooney knows the title chase is over for this season and he said: “We need to do better as a team, we are not in the best position but we will keep fighting, keep going and get ourselves into a good as

position as we can.

“That is aim now, to finish as high as we can, starting in our next game.”
