Premier League - Remy shines as Newcastle win denies Chelsea top spot

Loic Remy grabbed his sixth Premier League goal of the season as Newcastle completed a rousing 2-0 win over Chelsea at St James' Park.

Chelsea would have gone top of the standings with a win before Arsenal host Liverpool later on Saturday, but Jose Mourinho's men could not get to grips with a home side who were worthy of the three points for an impressive effort in the second half.

Yoan Gouffran threw himself at Yohan Cabaye's devilish free-kick to give the home side the lead with a diving header on 68 minutes before Remy smashed Vurnon Anita's pass into the Chelsea net via a post from 16 yards with Petr Cech left stranded in the final minute.

Chelsea's brightest moments on a saturated afternoon came during the first half with John Terry hitting a post with a header and seeing another headed effort knocked off the line by Davide Santon.

The visiting side's five points from their opening five away matches this season is their worst such return since three from their opening five in 2000-01. They could have no complaints.

Jose Mourinho suffers his second Premier League defeat as Chelsea manager at Newcastle’s St James’ Park – the joint-most defeats he has suffered at a single venue as Chelsea boss, along with Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium (two defeats in three visits).

TALKING POINT: How bad were Chelsea? Wasn't the greatest performance. Disappointing response when Newcastle upped the pace in the second half. Mourinho had used all his substitutes by the 70th minute to suggest all wasn't well. A point the Chelsea coach accepted afterwards.
