Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo could face punishment from Spain's Refereeing Committee (CTA) following his conduct during Saturday's 2-1 Clasico defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou.

The 28-year-old was furious having not been awarded a penalty after a clash with Barca defender Javier Mascherano, and he berated referee Undiano Mallenco in the process.

The chairman of the CTA, Victoriano Sanchez Arminio, has suggested that the former Manchester United winger could be sanctioned in the aftermath of the Blancos defeat.

"The referee's committee doesn't discard punishing Cristiano Ronaldo due to his complaints to Undiano Mallenco during the last Barcelona-Real Madrid match," he told La Sexta. "We demand respect for our referees."

He also called for "respect for the establishment of referees" and denied any possibility of punishing Mallenco.

The clash between Ronaldo and Mascherano occurred when the score was at 1-0 and proved a pivotal moment in the game. Gerardo Martino's side ended up prevailing 2-1 on the night thanks to goals from Neymar and Alexis Sanchez.
