Borussia Dortmund 3 : 0 Marseille - Easy for Dortmund

Last season's beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund got their Champions League campaign up and running with a 3-0 home win over Marseille.

Robert Lewandowski struck either side of a poorly defended Marco Reus free-kick as Dortmund got their first points after defeat away to Napoli in their opener a fortnight ago.

Coach Jurgen Klopp was banned from the touchline following his row with the fourth official in Italy, but his side hardly missed his presence as they easily overpowered Marseille.

After defeat in Naples a fast start was required for Klopp's side and they duly provided it to pave the way for Lewandowski's 19th-minute opener.

Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was immediately on alert as he made a fine save to keep out Reus' 20-yard drive but there was little he could do about Lewandowski's goal.

It came after a perfectly executed counter-attack, which saw Dortmund outnumber the Marseille defence six players to three.

It was therefore a matter of the home side quickly recycling the ball between themselves, effectively pulling apart the defence, before full-back Eric Durm slid in Lewandowski to tap into an empty net.

Marseille's response was for Mathieu Valbuena to fizz a free-kick on target that Dortmund's young Australian goalkeeper Mitch Langerak parried to safety.

Langerak, uncapped by his country, took his place between the posts following Roman Weidenfeller's red card against Napoli but Marseille failed to put him under any concerted pressure.

Instead, Dortmund pressed for a clear advantage with Kevin Grosskreutz's cross to the far post finding Lewandowski - only for Mandanda to save with his feet.

Lewandowski last week confirmed he would leave for Bayern Munich but - after a double in the weekend win over Freiburg - was again proving his full commitment to the cause as he created more space before firing over.

Dortmund had to wait until five minutes after half-time to go 2-0 up when Mandanda made a hash of Reus' 30-yard free-kick.

The OM goalkeeper expected Mats Hummels to get a touch in front of him as he jumped to meet it, but when he failed to make contact an off-balance Mandanda fumbled the ball into his net.

Marseille, third in Ligue 1, began to unravel and Nicolas N'Koulou gave away a clear penalty when he dived in on Reus.

Lewandowski converted the 80th-minute spot-kick down the middle, for his fourth goal in two games since confirming his exit, to seal an easy night.
