Catania vs Inter Milan preview - Moratti puts Inter first

Inter Milan will remain at the centre of Massimo Moratti's world even if the long-term president agrees to sell his majority stake in the club to Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir.

There were suggestions last weekend's 2-1 Serie A victory over Genoa could have been Moratti's last game at San Siro as Inter president - a role he has held since 1995 - as a deal to release up to 75 per cent of his controlling stake to newspaper magnate Thohir for 300million euros nears completion.

But ahead of Sunday's trip to Catania, Moratti stressed the share issue is far from being resolved while insisting he will not walk away from the club his family have run for almost 60 years.

He told inter.it: "We're looking to see if there can be friendly relationship between the two groups.

"And that's because I put Inter at the centre, meaning that I'm not looking to give preference to one group or the other.

"For me, first and foremost, it's like the birth of a child. You're not thinking about the mother or the father; you're thinking about the child, about what you need to do so that it's better off.

"This is what we're trying to figure out in this situation.

"I've also heard that, as well as [Inter v Genoa] being my last match, this is also supposed to be my last board meeting. It isn't."

Regardless of what happens at executive level, the Nerazzurri have already claimed three points for the fledgling season and Moratti is backing new coach Walter Mazzarri to keep the momentum building when the team travels to Sicily.

"Mazzarri takes a painstaking approach to his work, and he certainly does it with a strong sense of responsibility, so we're starting to see the results," he added.

Injured Inter quartet Diego Milito, Walter Samuel, Cristian Chivu and Javier Zanetti will not feature while Catania are missing Federico Freire, Gino Peruzzi and Sergio Almiron.

The Elefanti began the 2013-14 campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Fiorentina and defender Pablo Alvarez is seeking an immediate response.

"We have a great desire for redemption, the group deserves it," he told the Corriere dello Sport. "Inter deserve respect but we match our great sense of motivation with a high level of conviction.

"We can only worry about ourselves and I hope the team can climb as high as possible."
