Report: Cherundolo needs more knee surgery

Steve Cherundolo's road back keeps getting longer.

According to German publication Kicker, the veteran USA and Hannover 96 right back needs another knee surgery -- his third of 2013 and second of the summer -- and he will be sidelined for an undetermined amount of time.

Cherundolo had an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee in February and again in late June, preventing him from appearing with the U.S. national team during its hectic summer. He has not played for the national team since last October, and aside for a brief return for the end of Hannover's 2012-13 club season, he has been out of action for the entire year.

The development is a considerable setback for both Hannover and Cherundolo, who appears likely to be out for the remainder of the CONCACAF Hexagonal, with the final qualifier in Panama being played in less than two months.

The 34-year-old Cherundolo, Hannover's captain, has spent his entire club career with the Bundesliga outfit, joining the team in 1999. He signed a one-year contract extension with the club following last season and is its all-time leader in Bundesliga appearances.
