I want to win the lot in my first season

DAVID MOYES has vowed to “try to win everything” in his first campaign as Manchester United boss.

Moyes, 50, has only ever lifted one trophy as a manager.

And that was back in 2000 when he led Preston to the old Division Two title — now known as League One.

In 11 years in charge of Everton, silverware always eluded the Scot.

But in his new role at Old Trafford, Moyes will be going all-out to land five trophies.

And he is expected to get his first when United play Wigan in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 11.

Moyes said: “You have to do well in all competitions — not just the Premier League.

“When you are at Manchester United my thinking is you have to go for everything, you attempt to win everything.

“Maybe you miss out sometimes, but you have to try to win all the trophies.

“I’ve done it everywhere else I’ve been and I’ll certainly do it here because I have a bigger squad, quality players and a club with the tradition of being used to winning things.”

Moyes believes the fact he was personally selected by Alex Ferguson as his successor will command respect from the players and ensure they believe in him.

He added: “I’ve talked to the players and told them I hope they respect his decision to pick me.”

Moyes was identified as a man going places years ago by none other than former United star David Beckham.

Becks made his League debut as a Preston player in 1995 — on loan from United — and played alongside Moyes.

In his book My Side, Beckham said: “David Moyes was the top man.

“He was a centre-half and the kind who would throw himself into any tackle possible, even some that weren’t.

“He’d be shouting, geeing people up and was passionate about winning games. He was club captain and talked to me and got me involved right from the off.

“It’s not just hindsight — you could tell then that David was going to be a manager.

“He knew straight away what I was about, that I’d be quiet, keep myself to myself and just talk when I needed to.

“He put himself out to bring me into the group, to look after me, and I really appreciated that.”
Meanwhile, Beckham’s former midfield partner Paul Scholes is coming out of retirement — again.

The United legend, 38, hung up his boots in May after winning an 11th Premier League title.

Former England star Scholes has temporarily turned down the chance to join Moyes’s coaching staff.

But he has been tempted to grace the field again — to help raise money for his son’s football team.

Scholes, will feature in a coaches v dads match on July 26 to swell the coffers of Stalybridge Celtic Juniors, his 14-year-old lad Aaron’s team.

And he will be joined by former Blackburn and Aston Villa left-back Alan Wright, who also lives in the area.

Moyes insists the door remains open for Scholes to join his staff. He said: “Paul wants to spend time with his family, but we’ll bring him in when he’s ready.”
