New Roma coach Rudi Garcia hopes that he will be able to persuade midfielder Daniele De Rossi to stay at the club next season.
De Rossi has been linked with a departure from the club after losing out his first-team squad under Zdenak Zeman last season with Manchester City and Chelsea both linked with a move for him.
The rumours have persisted despite the clubs changing their respective managers and De Rossi himself has not denied the reports.
Garcia has made it clear that he hopes to retain the services of the Roma-born midfielder in preparation for the upcoming season.
"I'm working closely with [director of football Walter] Sabatini. We want to improve the squad but that first means retaining our best players - De Rossi is one of those," he told a press conference.
We have to work on the defensive side of the game. Roma conceded far too many goals last season."
Garcia, who joined Roma after a successful era at Lille which included a Ligue 1 title, has refused to rule out bringing his former players to Roma.
"I'm looking at a variety of players, both from Lille and elsewhere in France."
