Moyes must win the title

Moyes must win the titleTHREE new faces in charge of the five clubs who will challenge for the title will make next season a thriller.

The incoming managers at the teams who finished first, second and third last season are facing different kinds of challenges.

For once, and possibly the only time in history, the manager of Chelsea is under the LEAST pressure.

The club which seems to have a new manager for every home game has the most ground to make up after finishing last season 14 points behind champions Manchester United.

But it also means the yardstick by which you measure success is the shortest for the Special One — third last season and sixth before that.

It’s a hell of a lot easier to improve on that than it is for David Moyes at Old Trafford.

Taking over from Alex Ferguson gets you about five minutes to settle in before the expectation starts piling up.

He will be expected to win a first trophy in his debut year in charge of this country’s biggest club.
Success will be classified as winning the Premier League and/or the Champions League.

Moyes has got it a lot tougher to improve on this United team than Fergie did when he took over with them in the doldrums in 1986.

As champions it is difficult to go up from there.

Across town Manuel Pellegrini has made the best start so far with two great signings for City in Fernandinho and Jesus Navas.

That’s given him a bit of ground on his two rivals because at this stage it’s all about the signings they make between now and August 17 that will pay dividends next May.

If Cristiano Ronaldo goes back to United that will drag the pendulum their way again.

Chelsea have signed Germany striker Andre Schurrle and it seems the title race has already started.

I would love to see Ronaldo back in the Premier League. A talent like him graces any country.

What Moyes does need though is a world-class midfielder and that’s why I’ve been interested in stories linking him with Cesc Fabregas.

Pellegrini heads into a dressing room under massive pressure to deliver straightaway. The fact he is new to England will not matter one bit and nor should it.

He’s from Chile and in his team is Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and David Silva. All Spanish speakers with a command of English.

One tip, though. Wait until the transfer window closes at the end of August before you put your money down for a bet.
