Treble 'icing on the cake' for Bayern

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has called Saturday's DFB-Pokal triumph as the 'icing on the cake' on an historic season.

A goal from Thomas Muller followed by a brace from Mario Gomez ensured a 3-2 win over Stuttgart to complete a first ever treble for the Germans following their UEFA Champions League and Bundesliga titles.

It brought the curtain down on an incredible season for the Bavarians who can now look forward to life under Barcelona legend Pep Guardiola as manager Jupp Heynckes bows out in sensational fashion.

And although Bayern did have some average moments in Saturday's cup win, allowing Stuttgart to hit back with two goals from Martin Harnik, Sammer was ultimately pleased the club had been able to wrap up the campaign as winners.

"There were a couple of spells where we failed to live up to our high footballing standards, but that's only human just a week after the Champions League final," Sammer told the club's website.

"Jupp Heynckes has now received the recognition he deserves. His hallmarks are clarity, planning, attention to detail, work rate and wisdom.

"The treble is only the icing on the cake."

Meanwhile, Heynckes, who is rumoured to be considering a return to coach Real Madrid, paid tribute to his all-conquering side.

"It's an emotional moment. As everyone can see, we're a superb collective and a superb team. And the players have given me a fantastic gift. This treble is unique," he said.

Bayern won Bundesliga this season with a record tally of 91 points and lifted the Champions League trophy at Wembley last weekend with a dramatic 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Prior to Saturday's result, no other German team had achieved the elusive treble.
