CLOCK WATCH ... Alex Ferguson's side became known for scoring stoppage time goals
MICHAEL CARRICK is confident David Moyes will continue to win games in ‘Fergie Time’ as he cements Manchester United’s position as champions.
Alex Ferguson bowed out as boss on Sunday with a 5-5 draw at West Brom but Carrick says the 71-year-old’s DNA runs through the squad.
Moyes held his first team meeting as United boss yesterday and England midfielder Carrick said: “If Sir Alex left a legacy I think it’s the mentality of winning and NEVER giving up.
“You have seen that for many years here, the desire and enthusiasm to never give in.
“That is engrained in the players and hopefully we can carry that on.”
Carrick admitted he was gutted when the clock ticked down on Fergie’s career at The
Hawthorns without the team adding to the 81 Premier League goals they have scored in stoppage time — famously dubbed ‘Fergie Time’.
He confessed: “I was just waiting for a last-minute winner from Giggsy or Scholesy.
“
On a normal day we probably would have finished it off because we had it won twice at 3-0 and 5-2. We let it slip but, credit to West Brom, they kept going.
“We were disappointed because we wanted to win the game for the manager and for Scholesy.
“We wanted their last memory to be a win but, in the grand scheme of things, it probably doesn’t mean too much. At least it was exciting for everyone who watched the game.”
Carrick now has to adapt to working under new boss Moyes.
But he admits United will not face nearly as much upheaval as many clubs would with a change of manager. He said: “We will have to wait but, as players, we just embrace a new challenge.
“For so long we have had that stability. We would turn up for pre-season and know what to expect.
“Now there are going to be certain things that are new.
“But there is a structure here and there is not a lot wrong so we are all looking forward to the new manager coming in to take Manchester United forward.”
And Robin van Persie has no intention of settling for just one Premier League winners’ medal. The former Arsenal striker was part of a title-winning team in his first season at Old Trafford.
But he said: “I am not thinking I have my medal and this is it. I know how it feels now and I want more.”
