JOLEON LESCOTT has been called up for England’s World Cup qualifiers after Michael Dawson dropped out with a hamstring injury.

Roy Hodgson overlooked Lescott, 30, for the games against San Marino and Montenegro because he had not had enough firstteam football.

But the withdrawal of Tottenham centre-back Dawson opened the door for the Manchester City star’s international return.

England medics will check on Chelsea’s Gary Cahill, who tweaked his knee against West Ham yesterday.

And there was more bad news for England when it was revealed Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon is out with a groin injury.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas said: “Michael felt his right hamstring go in the first half against Fulham “If we had kept him on in the second half, we would be risking him with a major injury.

“Aaron won’t be able to make it. He’s been struggling a lot with injuries and in some ways we risked him against Inter Milan.

“He is on the brink of rupturing his groin, so we decided to take him out of the game.”

Three Lions boss Hodgson wants to save recalled Rio Ferdinand for the crunch game in Montenegro a week tomorrow and is not keen to start him against San Marino on Friday.

Hodgson promised Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson that he will follow Ferdinand’s carefully-prepared fitness programme which has been getting him through club games.

And that means not playing two full 90 minutes for England.
