WORD TO THE WISE ... boss Alex Ferguson gives it straight to Wayne Rooney
ALEX FERGUSON has told Wayne Rooney: You are being exploited by the FA.
The Manchester United boss says the FA punish Roo “more than anyone in the game” when he steps out of line.
And Fergie, preparing for today’s FA Cup tie with Chelsea, urged his striker to stop his off-field activities for the FA when he joins up with England.
He fumed: “Wayne shouldn’t have to do anything for the FA. I keep telling him he’s too trusting. I told him ‘I don’t know why you do it with the FA’.
“They’ve not helped him one bit. Every time he does anything they punish him more than anyone in the game. He should be realising that.”
Fergie’s blast comes a month after the FA fined him £12,000 for a rant at linesman Simon Beck.
The Old Trafford boss was also angry with the FA after England chief Roy Hodgson revealed Ashley Young’s absence from a squad was due to a knee injury and Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce confessed Phil Jones had shingles — information Fergie wanted to keep private.
Two years ago Rooney was given a retrospective ban for swearing into a camera after scoring at Upton Park which ruled him out of the 1-0 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City.
Rooney’s agent also threatened to withdraw his client from the FA’s commercial programmes in 2006 after they rejected United’s appeal against a ban for violent conduct following a pre-season friendly against Porto.
But Rooney has had more fines from his club than he has by the FA, who fought UEFA to reduce the striker’s three-match Euro 2012 ban by one game.
