FIFA: 2014 World Cup will see goal-line technology
OVER THE LINE ... but Frank Lampard's goal did not stand against Germany in 2010

FIFA have bowed to pressure to bring in goal-line technology in time for next year’s World Cup.

Football’s governing body finally acted after the storm over Frank

Lampard’s goal for England against Germany at South Africa 2010, which was wrongly ruled
out. The system will be introduced this year at the Confederations Cup before making its
debut in next summer’s finals in Brazil.

England were losing 2-1 to Germany when Lampard’s shot clearly crossed the line — only for
Uruguayan ref Jorge Larrionda to wave play on. The Germans eventually won 4-1.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter apologised to the FA at the time of the incident and vowed to re-open the goal-line technology debate. FIFA has issued licences to two companies, Hawk-Eye and GoalRef, to provide the technology.

They have also invited bids from other parties.

And the decision could now see the technology rolled out in other competitions.

A Premier League spokesman said: “We have been a long-term advocate for goal-line
technology. We have held discussions with FIFA-licensed providers with a view to introducing it as soon as is practically possible.”

Former Manchester United keeper Roy Carroll infamously scooped a Pedro Mendes shot out from behind the line in a game against Spurs.

He said: “I am extremely pleased video technology is finally being introduced, it’s about time.”
